MYSTERIOUS DEATH OF: Lakesha Thompson
In May 2023, Lakesha Thompson’s entire family was upended by a single bullet that took their mother away from them forever. From the beginning, who pulled the trigger has been the question at the forefront of her family’s mind. Investigators determined pretty quickly that it was a self-inflicted wound. Except there are key pieces of evidence at the scene that just don’t line up. Her family has spent years fighting for a second look at the case…only to be told it’s closed… but that doesn’t mean the mystery is solved.

Timeline:
Lakesha Thompson and Nathan Fitten begin dating.
A woman who identifies Nathan as her ex-boyfriend calls 911 from outside his home. She says Nathan pointed a gun at her and alleges he had previously threatened to shoot her. No charges are filed.
Lakesha announces to her four children that she and Nathan are engaged.
Around 4:00 a.m.
Nathan calls Lakesha’s daughter, Ondrea Fluker, and says he and Lakesha had been drinking and had called off their engagement. According to Ondrea, he initially says Lakesha left his house, then says she has returned and is ringing the doorbell and banging on the door.
Around 6:30 a.m.
Nathan calls 911 and reports that Lakesha shot herself.
Around 9:00 a.m.
The Clayton County Medical Examiner’s Office calls Ondrea and tells her Lakesha died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
After Ondrea pushes investigators for an autopsy, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation performs one.
Detective Andrea Rosas tells Ondrea that the GBI ruled Lakesha’s death a suicide. Clayton County closes the case.
Lakesha’s family hires private investigator Walter Reddick, who obtains the police records and begins reviewing body camera footage, reports and crime scene photos.
Walter and attorney Chelsea Golding meet with GBI medical examiner Dr. Keith Lehman, who performed Lakesha’s autopsy. They learn he had not received death-scene photos or investigative context when he originally ruled Lakesha’s death a suicide.
The GBI changes Lakesha’s manner of death from suicide to undetermined after Dr. Lehman reviews the additional material.
Clayton County PD tells Ondrea’s PI and Attorney that there is not enough information to reopen Lakesha’s case. It remains closed.
